Elmer Wilfred Littlejohn Genealogy and Family History Notes

Littlejohn: Elmer

Elmer Littlejohn is the eldest son of Ernest Wilfred and Minnie Caroline (Peters) Littlejohn. He was born August 10, 1919 at Hansworth, Saskatchewan.

The family moved to the Browning district in the fall of 1919. Elmer received his education at Yankee School. Since they lived only a quarter of a mile from the school, Elmer tried skipping out several times in his first year but was always sent back.

While in his early teens, he helped with the farming. He and Bill Sinclair Jr. together drove a stook team for the threshing outfit. They received about a dollar a day each and this usually went toward the family income.

In 1936, Elmer's father died. Elmer took over the farming and helped his mother raise a family of five sisters and one brother.

During World War II, Elmer took thirty days' training in Regina in 1941 with the South Saskatchewan Regiment. On July 15, 1942, Elmer joined the active service with the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps. He was stationed at Prince Albert. He received thirty days harvest leave and upon returning was sent to Calgary for advanced training. He received four days' Christmas leave prior to going to Kingston, Ontario. He received further training in Mechanics.

In March 1943 Elmer was given embarkation leave. He spent four days at home during which time it stormed continually. On his way back to Kingston, he was delayed when the train from Maryfield was cancelled. A further delay at Winnipeg, when the train was six hours late., meant he was nearly two days late reporting back to his unit. Fortunately he had the foresight to get the station agents at Maryfield and Winnipeg to give him letters to verify his delay.

At the end of March 1943, Elmer boarded the Queen Elizabeth at Halifax and after four days at sea the ship docked at Edinburgh, Scotland.

He served at different points in England before going to France. There he drove a tank transporter with the Second Canadian Recovery Unit. This took him through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. When the war ended he was in Oldenburg, Germany.

He returned to England and spent Christmas, 1945 at camp. It was not until February, 1946 that Elmer was on broad the troop ship, Ile de France, and homeward bound. He was discharged on March 4, 1946 and returned to farming at Browning.
