Local couple married 56 years
By Ethel Gilbert
News Women's Editor

Today marks the 56th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Gordon, 370, 11th Ave. S.E., who were married in Arcola, Sask. in 1912.

From Mr. Gordon who dropped in at our office, we learned he was born on a farm in Ontario, near Higate, which is 20 miles from Chatham. Following a teaching career of five years he "headed for the wild and wooly west in 1911, landing in Winnipeg." Two days later he "was fortunate enough to find employment at the magnificent amount of $50 per month".

Mrs. Gordon, who was also born on a farm, near Alcester, South Dakota, emigrated to Canada in 1905 "... Before the birth of Saskatchewan."

Their marriage in Arcola was preformed by a Rev. James Smith, a minister of the Methodist Church, and they have three daughters, Mrs. R. A. Baillod (Mildred), Vangaurd, Sask; Mrs C. H. Dowling (Frances) Calgary, Alberta and Mrs. S. K. McWalter (Shirley) Montreal, Que. A son died in 1927.

Mr. Gordon operated retail lumber yards in Cupar and Wapella, Sask, for twenty years, following which, with his wife, he spent six years operating a grocery store and restaurant in Wapella.

"We led busy lives" said Mr. Gordon, explaining how they had moved to Minoki, Ontario, in 1940, where they ran a general store and post office for four years, selling out and buying another general store in Rathwall, Manitoba. Selling this business they retired to Calgary but after two years they settled in Medicine Hat in 1952, where they are now resident.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon have six grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.

Mr. Gordon, an avid curler, has curled in "most of the larger centers, from Winnipeg to Vancouver," while Mrs. Gordon's interests lie in gardening, quilting and fancywork. They are members of Fifth Avenue United Church .

"Speaking of chips from the wood-box of memory" said Mr. Gordon, " I was mayor of Cupar, Sask when that hustling town was host to Baron Byng, Governor- General of Canada. Aidede- camp to the Govenor in 1941 was non other than Mr. Vanier, later to become Govenor-General of Canada. And in 1916 the great hockey player Eddie Shore, was a member of the Cupar Hackey Club."

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon are still in very good health, although Mr. Gordon suffered a fractured hip in 1963. They are enjoying the company of their three daughters and three of their grandchildren who have arrived to honor them on this anniversary.

Gordon: James & Catherine

James Gordon was born in Highgate, Ontario on March 8, 1886. In 1911, he came west to Winnipeg and shortly thereafter arrived in Browning to take charge of the Yankee school district, having previously taught in Ontario for five years.

Catherine Peters was born on a farm near Alcester, South Dakota on January 13, 1895. She, along with her parents, brothers and sisters, moved to Canada in 1905, taking up residence on a farm just south of Browning, later named Willow Lodge Farm.

Jim and Catherine were married in Arcola on August 30, 1912 by Rev. James E. Smith.

Jim later operated a store in Browning before moving to Arcola. Their daughter Mildred was born in Browning, and a daughter Frances was born in Arcola.

The family moved from Arcola to Cupar in 1917, where a son Albert, and a daughter, Shirley were born. Other moves were to Wapella in 1929, to Minaki, Ontario in 1940, to Calgary in 1950 and then to Medicine Hat where they retired in 1952.

Mildred is now Mrs. Russell Baillod of Medicine Hat. Frances is Mrs. Charles Dowling of Lethbridge and Shirley is Mrs. Keith McWalter of Calgary.

Albert died of diphtheria in 1927. Catherine passed away in 1968 and Jim in 1971.
